Choose Kind

From Life by Design, Not Default, Vol. 1

Nice is performative. Kind is actionable.

Nice is about how something looks. Kind is about what something does.

Nice wants to be liked. It smooths edges, avoids discomfort, and often says what feels good in the moment. Nice is polite even when it’s dishonest. It keeps the peace, sometimes at the expense of the truth.

Kind is different.

Kind considers impact, not approval. It takes responsibility for outcomes, not appearances. Kind may be quiet. It may be firm. It may even be uncomfortable. But it is rooted in care, not performance.

Kind doesn’t always feel good. Sometimes it tells the truth when silence would be easier. Sometimes it sets a boundary when compliance would be nicer. Sometimes it says no when yes would be more socially acceptable.

Nice avoids conflict. Kind navigates it.

Nice is often about maintaining an image. Kind is about honoring reality. It asks, what is actually helpful here, not what will make me look good.

Kind is not soft by default, and it is not harsh by nature. It is thoughtful. It is intentional. It is real.

Choose kind over nice.

Nice may be pleasant.

Kind is considerate, grounded, and honest.
