Sex Is a Penny

From Life by Design, Not Default, Vol. 1

In healthy relationships there are many components. Love. Trust. Safety. Honesty. Respect. Passion. Communication. If we were to assign each of these a value based on how easy they are to attain, sex would be a penny.

Pennies are everywhere. You find them on the ground. Sitting on counters with a little sign that says, take one. People give them away without thinking. They have value, technically, but very little weight.

That does not mean pennies are useless. It means they are common.

You do not find quarters lying around like that. You do not trip over them on the sidewalk. You do not see jars labeled, help yourself. Quarters require intention. They require exchange. Maybe trust is a quarter. Safety might be a half dollar. Honesty might be a dollar bill. Passion might be a nickel, not rare, but not free either.

Sex, on its own, is easy to access. That is why it cannot carry a relationship. You cannot build something lasting out of pennies alone. You can pile them up and still not have much.

The mistake people make is confusing availability with value. Something being easy to get does not make it meaningful. It just makes it accessible.

In strong relationships, sex matters. But it is not the currency. It is the change. It enhances what is already there, but it cannot replace it.

If someone is offering you only pennies and calling it wealth, it is worth asking what else is missing from the exchange.
